The world’s deepest gorge, the steep mountain slopes, the beautiful valleys, the virgin forests, the cool rivers with turquoise waters and the alpine lakes constitute a paradise for outdoor activities all year round. Trekking lovers will have the chance choose among a variety of mountain trails in Zagorochoria. Crossing the Vickos Gorge is a lifetime experience, the magical “Drakolimni”, one of the three alpine lakes which was, according to the myth, used to be inhabitated by dragons, will impress you. High mountains and rushing rivers offer plenty of adrenaline-pumping excitement. You can kayak down the Aoos, top of the list in beauty and difficulty, raft the Voidomatis and the Arachthos rivers. If you prefer more sedate activities, there is horseback riding, bird watching or trout fishing. For those seeking to go completely out the beaten track, there are beekeeping or loom-felt seminars and lessons for homemade cheese and yogurt.

Driving directions

Zagori Suites is built at an altitude of 1000 meters gazing the mountainpicks of Pindos. It is located in Vitsa at the central Zagori, only 37 kilometers from the city of Ioannina.

Vitsa is one of the most beautiful villages of Zagori, with elegant houses, cobbled streets and is the perfect base to explore all the traditional villages of Eastern and Western Zagori, Tsepelovo, Kipi, Monodendri, Ano Pedina, Aristi, Papigo. The famous Vikos Gorge is 1km away.

Visitors travelling from Thessaloniki through Egnatia highway (E90) drive until Ioannina. There is a sign in Egnatia just before Metsovo to turn right to Zagori. DO NOT TURN THERE. YOU SHOULD EXIT EGNATIA AT IOANNINA, NOT EARLIER. If there is no need to enter the city, 3 km after the exit from Egnatia to Ioannina  take the ring road (E951). You end up in front of the airport where you turn left to Kozani (E853). At the 19th kilometer and after passing the village Metamorphosis (Karyes), turn right towards Central Zagori - Vikos Gorge and follow the signs to the villages Vitsa - Monodendri. The route is about 30 minutes from Ioannina. You will see Zagori Suites at the entrance of Vitsa. 

Visitors travelling from Athens, drive along A8 (Olympia odos) to Korinth and Patra. The road until Xylokastro region is brand new and easy to drive. For the last 80 km until you reach to Rio – Antirio Bridge there are still roadworks in progress. Then cross the bridge of Rio-Antirio or choose the ferry. Drive towards Ioannina through Ionia Odo A5. There are many new lengthy parts of Ionia Odo (A5) opened for driving. 4 kilometers before Ioannina city, turn left to the Ring Road of Ioannina (labels for Kozani, Kakavia, k.Pyrros Airport) and follow the Ring Road around Ioannina city. You end up in front of the airport where you turn left towards to Konitsa. At the 19th kilometer and after passing the village Metamorphosis (Karyes), turn right towards Central Zagori - Vikos Gorge and follow the signs to the villages Vitsa - Monodendri. The route is about 30 minutes from Ioannina. You will see Zagori Suites at the entrance of Vitsa. The duration of the trip is approximately 5 hours.
